Not Me! Monday.... Getting My Feet Wet....

I've been wanting for a long time to participate in
Not Me! Monday over at MckMama's blog, but I haven't been able to work up the guts that other bloggers I enjoy, apparently have. Last week however, was just too good not to share.

So here's how Not Me! Monday works.
It was born out of a desire to admit one's imperfections and reveal some moments one would rather forget. Feel free to join in and share what you have not been doing.... it might prove therapeutic!

So here goes:
Last Tuesday, as temperatures spiked to highs not seen previously this summer, I did NOT decide that it was an auspicious day to pull out my cutting board and huge stockpot and cook up a 2-3 week batch of fruit soup in my sweltering kitchen. Nope! Not me!!

I definitely did NOT then forget about the pot that I had slaved over and then left to cool down a bit on the stove, only to discover it a full 24 hours later still standing on the burner. That would be just terrible.....

I also did not decide on the following day, with temperatures still hovering near 90 degrees, that I should right then and there prepare an even LARGER pot (5-6 weeks worth) of chicken soup, which simmers for three hours. Not me.....
I also did not run around to all my family members begging them to remind me not to forget that pot on the stove all night as well.
I DEFINITELY DID NOT then subsequently proceed to once again forget that pot on the stove until morning. That would certainly NOT be something I would do......

Sooooo..... what have you all not been doing lately? :D

It cooks for 3 hours after coming to a boil and in this weather, THAT'S ENOUGH!!!

No, chicken soup needs to cook all night.

I put the soup up in the AM, put it on the blech, eat it at night BUT not when I had a Washington Heights kitchen, which have been known to have no windows... (though mine had one.)

And I (aka my husband) have left leftover soup out overnight and found it there in the morning. I so hear you.

Washington Heights apartments with no kitchen windows?!?!??!
I've been here all my life and I've never seen THAT!

If it's true confessions time...then how about putting up an oversize crockpot in the morning with a meat meal because you're going to be feeding a large crew and won't be home until late. Only instead of slow/low you put the control on off and come home to no supper at all only a few minutes before everyone else is due to arrive. And having to kick your hubby under the table as he starts to say "I thought we were having chicken..." as you are serving hastily concocted omelettes and toast to a crew that had been traveling for over a week and was looking forward to a home cooked fleishig meal. And having to hide the crockpot in the bottom of the pantry because you don't have time to ditch the contents. And then forgetting that you hid it. And everyone's walking into the kitchen the next day wondering what had died, while you bravely smile and lie that an onion went bad.

I didn't think anybody could make me feel better but you just did!
And thanks for the belly laugh!!!
(an onion went bad... hahahahaha....)

I knew someone who had a double who didn't have one, I think- it was awhile ago. And someone else whose kitchen was more of an alcove,
on an interior wall. Again, I think.

Don't duel with Wusthoffs! Do you know how hard those things are to kasher?

Here to possibly resolve the chicken soup machloket is the Brisker foodie (soon coming to a local cable network show near you): Are you making chicken broth or chicken stock? The former (using meat) can cook for as little as an hour and still produce something quite tasty; the latter (using bones) should simmer for as long as you have patience for and then some.

ProfK: The Lovely Wife(tm) has no connection with your experience, and most certainly could NOT tell you how she erroneously assumed that our new crockpot's dial had an intermediary setting between "low" and "high" when in fact it only had two settings and setting the knob in between was the equivalent of "off." She would furthermore NOT be able to tell you about the horrific smell of raw chicken and barley left on a counter in a hot kitchen for 24 hours.

There's relief in knowing that people have made the same "d'oh!" mistakes as you... bone-headedness may love company more than misery does!

Efrexs,
Now I am feeling decidedly better. Thank your Lovely Wife for me.

Oh, poor you!
I have a similar crockpot story - wherein my father came for Shabat (a once in YEARS kind of situation) and the crockpot, still full of yet uncooked cholent, was temporarily unplugged to make way for a mixer. Except... we of course forgot to plug it back in... oof!
You're right, this is lovely therapy :)
