When you pass by, they are clear doors and the inside of the dressing room is completely visible. When you step inside the dressing room, a motion detector triggers an electric current in the glass which renders it opaque. I wish I'd had the forethought to video the process for you (but I was a bit worn out from shopping with aforementioned teenager). Thankfully, I found a YouTube clip of just this phenomenon.

Technology for technology's sake.
Yup. The newish hotel in Israel at the mamilla mall. The bathrooms in the hotel room are clear until you turn the lights on and then it fogs up. Cool concept but can be annoying in practice.
I'd worry about malfunctions. What happens when a wire gets loose? If you want to know if the room is vacant, look for feet under the door.
There may be applications for which this technology will come in very handy, but fitting-room doors is not one of them.
