Was discussing shlussel challah with my mom today and she said that not everyone actually baked a real key into the challah. In her home they made multiple impressions of the key in the challah dough but baked the dough without the key in it.

Trying to find sources for this interesting minhag. Discovered this line, which I love:
"It is always hard to tell where an explanation is an ex-post-facto rationalization, especially for segulot."
Have a good week. Your challah looks fabulous. I see something that looks like a key by the wine glass.
Leora - That's the spoon for the salt cellar.
I apologize once again that the pic is not "clickable". I wonder if blogspot made some changes... they always used to be.....
I should have been more specific. The key is foil wrapped and "in" the challah.

Wow, those look impressive. I am jealous.
I know you said it is not a Yekkish Minhag, but you do it anyhow. I don't understand how that justifies it.
It's like wearing a Kapotah and Streimel, because it keeps you warm, even though it isn't a Yekkish Minhag.
Where do we draw the line, and hold true?
