If You Could Have Anyone To Dinner, Who Would It Be?

I'll let you choose up to 3........
(I'm still thinking....)

{U/D.... Ok, I've got mine. But I'm only going to share after I get sufficient comments :) }

*sigh* you know, I actually have work to do...

Some possibilities, and I'll probably think of more later (where I give two possibilities, the first assumes anybody, the second living people only):

1) Hashkafic conversation dinner:
R' Hirsch, R' Yosef Soloveitchik, and the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Friday night dinner during the winter, so that the conversation can last well into the evening/ late night. Alternatively, a seudat shlishit with R' Aharon Rakeffet, Alan Brill, and G6's aunt-in-law (If we don't have a hard-and-fast ending time, we'll never end!).

2) Theater chat:
Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, and Noel Coward. Alternatively, Stephen Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, and Michael John LaChiusa. Sunday evening after a matinee performance.

3) Family dinner:
My paternal grandparents Z"L, so they could see my children and I'd finally be able to sing all those songs from "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Carousel" with grandma that I didn't know back then. Memorial day/ Fourth of July

4) To talk food:
Julia Child, Graham Kerr and Jacques Pepin. Better be on a holiday weekend (I'll need two days to prepare!).

5) To talk kosher food: Chol Hamo'ed dinner with Jeff Nathan, Michael Gershkovich, and Levana Kirschenbaum.

G6: for your dinner, what would you serve, and how would you decorate? :)

Unbelievable!
Without giving my picks away, efrex, I will say that two of my picks are embedded in two different scenarios of yours (one in each)....

And for the guests I've chosen, it'd be my regular Friday night dinner table decor, possibly with a yom tov dinner menu :)

1) Adam. Moshe. Dovid. (Would answer a lot of Q's. :) )

I could make millions of different lists, depending on what I'm going for.

1) You (I love meeting online folks in real life)

2) one of my friends who lives in Newton, MA

3) one of my friends who lives in Cambridge, MA

I hardly ever see those friends anymore. Did you want me to mention famous people? Not all that interested. Unless you are considered famous?

I am unsure wether the Neviim would eat in our homes, no matter how amy hecsherim are on the cauliflower florrettes. They dont know from the Vaad of St. Louis, for example.

Rashi, Bruriah, and Resh Lakish. If I could get one more, Rav Eliezer, whose arms were like two rolled-up Torah scrolls...

This is much too hard.

I also want a meal with R. Hirsch and Bamberger together, along with R. Ovadia Yosef

Meir Kahane, Moshe Fieglin, Israel Eldad.

BS"D,

I don't think placing R. Hirsch and R' Bamberger together at the same table is the smartest idea!

Meir:

You think that's a problem? How do you feed two yekkes and a sephardi at the same time?

For R' Hirsch and R' Bamberger, a nice bowl of gruenkern, some Aufschnitt*, and you'd have a perfectly non-confrontational meal (if only because it's hard to argue with a mouthful of chewy kernels, or trying hard not to think about what goes into those multi-colored cold cuts).

Hmm... maybe if you stirred some zhug into R' Ovadia's gruenkern...

(ducks and runs for cover as the yekkes start throwing stale water challahs at his head)_______
*just make sure you don't slur the word and make it sound like Austritt... :)

My responses will follow when I am more fully awake, but after all this, it's probably a letdown.

This has been very interesting.
Keep your responses coming.
Mine were as follows:

1. My paternal grandfather who was niftar before I was born.

2. My first great-great grandson as an adult (Michael says this is cheating but I never set any parameters.... and I'd kind of like to see how things are turning out in the future....)

3. Rav Hirsch(seemingly a popular choice) - I'd like a chance to clear up some things... I'm getting really really tired of people saying, 'Rav Hirsch would have said this" or "Rav Hirsch *meant* that".

Anonymous said...

1. Mr. Avram Gutman
2. Rav Yisroel Mantel
3. R' Shamshon Raphael Hirsch

harry-er than them all said...

Moshe Rabeinu, R' Yehuda Hanasi, R' Yosef Karo.
the 3 who basically codified judaism. i'd like to know if any of them recognize what we practice today
